Chapter 23

Penny

I didn’t want to interact with Garth and his team, so I spent the next day sequestered on my boat, trying to come up with suggestions for getting the stalled resort project back on track. It was easy work because from what I’d seen, someone had taken pains to design every single process in the most cumbersome, time-consuming, least-productive way possible.

At first I didn’t see how someone could accidentally set up EVERY process so badly, but then it hit me. Whoever had done this had done it deliberately to drag out the construction for as long as possible. And I could think of several reasons why someone would want to extend the construction process.

The dive crew might have wanted to ensure that this easy job lasted as long as possible. That was a best case scenario with an easy fix.

Kraken Industries and Resorts—and therefore its owner Brock Moran—might be scamming the project’s other investors if there were any. I’d have to get Newton to look into that aspect.

Either Brock or someone on the crew might have heard about the cave from Miguel or Alonzo, and now they could be looking for the location of the cave where the gold sea monsters lay hidden.

Or possibly all of or any combination of these possible scenarios.

The idea made my head spin. So I started trying to solve the mystery. The first thing I thought of was that if Brock were looking to delay the project, why would he ask me to find ways to speed up the process? Unless he was trying to convince his investors that he was doing everything in his power to complete the project on time, and he was using my involvement as a proof point—albeit one not likely to have a major impact on production.

As far as he knew, I had no expertise in business or construction, so I wasn’t a good choice for the role he’d given me. Yet he seemed adamant that I continue, and he tried to keep me isolated from the crew and refused to let them distract me.

What I found the most frustrating was trying to figure out who had an incentive to destroy the ecology of the island and its underwater habitat. In the long run that would hurt the resort’s ability to attract customers, so in my mind it was unlikely that Brock Moran was behind it. I was beginning to wonder if he was even aware of the devastation below the surface.

That is, unless he was trying to drag things out to find the sea monsters or scam his investors. In which case, it was in his best interest to be able to say the project was no longer viable, but thanks for the money.

In the short term, the dive crew had to do their diving in polluted waters several times a day. Granted, the dead fish and unpalatable gunk permeating the water also kept people who didn’t have to work underwater out of the ocean, which allowed the crew to work at their current leisurely pace without interference.
